TED is a nonprofit organization devoted to Ideas Worth Spreading. Started as a four-day conference in California 30 years ago, TED has grown to support its mission with multiple initiatives. The two annual TED Conferences invite the world’s leading thinkers and doers to speak for 18 minutes or less. Many of these talks are then made available, free, at TED.com. TED speakers have included Bill Gates, Jane Goodall, Elizabeth Gilbert, Sir Richard Branson, Nandan Nilekani, Philippe Starck, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Sal Khan and Daniel Kahneman.
The annual TED Conference takes place each spring in Vancouver, British Columbia. TED’s media initiatives include TED.com, where new TED Talks are posted daily; the Open Translation Project, which provides subtitles and interactive transcripts as well as translations from volunteers worldwide; the educational initiative TED-Ed. TED has established the annual TED Prize, where exceptional individuals with a wish to change the world get help translating their wishes into action; TEDx, which supports individuals or groups in hosting local, self- organized TED-style events around the world, and the TED Fellows program, helping world-changing innovators from around the globe to amplify the impact of their remarkable projects and activities.
John Petrie | Programme Director
As our TEDxPlymouthUniversity Licensee, Co-Organiser and Programme Director, I make sure that our events are both true to our vision and the spirit of TED. I look after our team alongside Chez and Garry, ensuring that we’re all doing what needs to be done to deliver a thought-provoking event. I put together our speaker schedule and work with our speakers to put on a show where our talks are complementary and spark new and interesting conversations.
Richard Adams | Executive Producer/Director
As our Co-Organiser and Executive Producer, I make sure that everything comes together on the night and keep in touch with other TEDx organisers to get the latest tips. I look after our budget, manage the event team, and solve all the logistical conundrums a high profile event like TEDx throws at us. I work with Garry and John with all of our tech support and our speakers to put on an event that runs seamlessly.
Garry Hunt | Technical Director
As our Technical Director, I make sure our website is up to date and looking smart, keep a watchful eye on our online campaigns, put together our slide deck for the event, liaise with tech support, and help us engage with Plymouth’s digital community. While Chez and John look after the speakers and logistics, I make sure that everything comes together on the digital side to put on a great show and keep our TEDx community enthused.
Sam Starkey | Brand Manager
As our Brand Manager, my job is to make sure that our events each have their own unique brand that complements our vision for TEDxPlymouthUniversity. From graphics for social media to designing the event programme, I ensure our events have a creative and engaging identity that is consistent across the board.
Trudie Haywood | Communications Manager
As our Communications Manager, my job is to write. A lot. I make sure that you get to find out what’s happening with TEDxPlymouthUniversity. Working with Garry, Hannah, and John I run our email campaigns, write press releases, and make sure our blog is updated, so that you get the latest TEDxPlymouthUniversity news.
Hannah Fleming-Hill | Social Media Manager
As our Social Media Manager, my job is to do exactly what it says on the tin. I manage our social media accounts to help grow and engage our audience, and keep building our TEDx community here in Plymouth. I work with Garry, Trudie, and Sam to produce the content you want to see, from tweets letting you know what’s going on to chatting with the audience on Facebook Live
Dave Kilroy | Partnerships Manager
As our Partnerships Manager, my job is to make sure that we bring in the sponsorship needed to keep our events running, and look after our relationships with the people that help us make TEDxPlymouthUniversity happen. I work alongside Chez and John to ensure all of our sponsors are in keeping with the spirit of TED, and that they compliment our events.
Amber Strong | Volunteer Manager
As our Volunteer Manager, my job is to build and manage our teams of volunteers, and to make sure we are engaging with the TEDx community in Plymouth. I help our student volunteers setup their own events and look after our event volunteers on the night, so that they have a great time while making sure our audience do too.
Alana Hunter | International Liason
As our International Liaison, my job is to engage with our international partners to make sure they can enjoy TEDxPlymouthUniversity as much as our audience on the night. I work alongside Chez and John to develop our international audience, using my relationships with partner institutions to encourage them to join our TEDx community.
About TEDx, x = independently organized event
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TED Talks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized. (Subject to certain rules and regulations.)
